What a year at Dance Sensations!
So it’s a week late…but I was sitting back today reflecting on what an amazing, fun, inspiring year 2017 was! I couldn’t let the opportunity go by without sharing some of the amazing things that happened here at Dance Sensations over the last 12 months. It’s impossible to squish all the phenomenal things that happened in 2017 into 1 little blog…but let’s see how we go 🙂
Unbelievable dance classes!
Seems like a funny one for a ‘Year in Review’…but I am constantly blown away by the fantastic work that goes on in our dance classes here at Dance Sensations. Every time I walk into a classroom throughout the year I see happy, enthusiastic students learning and growing as dancers. Massive kudos to our fantastic DS Teachers who work so hard on making their classes fun, engaging, rewarding and challenging for each and every student. I think that everyone will agree that this hard work showed through on stage at both the Mid Year and End of Year Concerts.
DanceStep assistant teacher training program
Something that we were SUPER excited about this year was the introduction of our Assistant teacher training program. Our initial intake saw 18 eager young students begin level 1 of this 4 stage program. Throughout the program they will learn and develop their leadership skills and other invaluable skills that will come in handy at school and the workforce. This is learnt through a Theory workbook, group training sessions and weekly assistant teaching with cour Senior Teachers at Dance Sensations. We’ve had some great feedback from parents, assistant teachers and the students they are assisting with already! We’re looking forward to working with this current group as they progress and to welcoming a new intake in 2018!
Dance Sensations Mid Year Concert
As it always is, the Dance Sensations Mid Year concert is always a highlight of the year. The Mid Year Showcase is always an amazing day for the students, being able to show their friends and family what they’ve achieved in a relaxed and laid back atmosphere. It was again held at the Kiama Showground Pavilion. We had 7 individual shows across the Saturday and Sunday this year, with each student only performing in one of those shows. Phil Winterton took some great photos of the day, a few of which you can see below. I really loved all of the photos that Phil took at Mid Year as I feel they really captured what the day is all about…the kids having fun and sharing their love of dance with their family and friends.
Dance Sensations wins Dance Studio of the Year!!
This year, for the first time Dance Sensations was nominated for the Illawarra and South Coast Small Business awards. It was an absolute honour to be nominated for this prize. In August Amanda, Nathan, Claudia and Reegan went along to the awards night at Dapto Leagues Club and were super stoked to be announced as the WINNER of best Dance Studio category #GoDS! On top of that, our incredible director Amanda was named a finalist in the Business Person of the Year category!
RAD Ballet Exams
This year in September saw our first group of students for quite a number of years sit their Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) Ballet Examinations. These exams were the culmination of 18 months of commitment and dedication from these students working towards their goal of passing these exams. The exams were sat as DS Kiama for the majority of students, with our Intermediate Foundations students Brooke, Olivia and Eluned travelling up to RAD headquarters in Sydney to sit their exams! We could not have been prouder of this amazing group of students who as a whole received fantastic results, especially for a group of students who had never done an exam before. We look forward to seeing their continued improvement and progressions through the grades.
Get the Beat National Finals
In the term 3 school holidays this year, 110 of our DS Troupe students and their families travelled to sunny Caloundra to compete in the National Finals of Get the Beat. This saw our Troupes and soloists competing against the best of the best from Australia, New Zealand and South East Asia. There was far too many amazing performances and results to list here but there were two things from this week that stood out for us here at DS:
- The ‘Neverland’ Entertainment Troupe routine which saw over 100 of our students onstage performing together. These students ranged in age from 4 to 23 years old. It is always such an amazingly positive team bonding experience having such a range of students work together. The younger students get such a thrill dancing with the ‘big kids’ that they idioise, and our senior students really step up as leaders and are such great positive role models for these younger students.
- Being awarded the GTB Studio Spirit Award for the unbelievable support our students showed to every dancer on stage at the competition. The praise that our studio received from the competition organisers, judges and dance industry professionals was left us with an amazing sense of pride and achievement. One judge even commented to the audience that “…these guys (DS) are what the Dance Industry is all about”. WOW.
DS Love Concert 2017
In December, we again headed to the amazing Shoalhaven Entertainment Centre for our annual concert. There couldn’t have been a more perfect name for the 2017 Dance Sensations concert than ‘DS Love’. It really embodies everything that we’re about here at DS.
In all of our Dance Classes, our teachers share their love of all things dance and all things DS. This absolutely shone through in every single performance on stage. From our 3 year old Minis to the adults in our advanced classes and every one in between.
The video at the top of this blog says it all for me. The happiness, anticipation and of course the DS Love and DS Spirit is there on all of the performers faces. These expressions, and seeing the kids performing up on stage having the time of their lives is what inspires us as teachers to keep doing what we do. #DSLove #WEareDS
