Cheerleading is an internationally recognised sport that involves a mixture of dance, gymnastics and acrobatic techniques. At Dance Sensations we offer both competitive and recretional cheerleading classes therefore our cheer program is very popular. All levels of our classes receive amazing training from our dedicated dance teaching team. All skills are practiced on our fully sprung IASF competition standard floor including tumbling, stunts and choreography.
There are four main positions that you can be cast in a cheerleading class. These are: base, flyer, back spot and front spot. Your position on the team is dependant on your strengths as an athlete, your physical build, and who else is on your team. Below is a little breakdown of each position and what kind of dancer will best fit each.
Flyer – A smaller athlete who is lifted in the during a stunt. Flyers need to be confident and trusting of their bases in order to complete stunts with their team. It is also helpful to be flexible and have a strong core in this position.
Bases – There are two bases in almost every stunt group (one to support each leg of the flyer). Bases the foundation of a stunt and are therefore required to be very strong and sturdy.
Back Spot – The backspot is usually quite tall as they need to be able to reach above the bases’ grip on the flyer. Back spots support both bases and the flyer during the stunt.
Front Spot – Front spots are a support to the overall stunt (similar to the backspot). They act as an extra set of hands and support during stunts. Front Spots also watch for any errors and act as a spotter in case a lift comes down.
Cheerleading class routines typically include a ‘tumbling section’ in which the dancers take turns performing skills across the floor. At Dance Sensations we use the acrobatic arts syllabus to train our dancers in the safest and most effective way. By starting with the basics, students in the dance class can progress up through the levels. As the they gain strength, coordination, and flexibility they will level up to new skills. This system enables every student to learn skills suited to their level, from forwards rolls all the way to backflips!
At Dance Sensations our cheerleading classes are split into two streams; competitive and recreational. Below is a description of each to help you decide which program you or your child is best suited to join. We aspire to help every student find the program that gives them the best cheerleading experience.
Recreational Cheerleading – Our number one goal is to make dance a fun and enjoyable experience that all students can’t wait to do each week! Our experienced teachers ensure that their cheerleading classes are happy and inclusive places where they can share their love of all things cheer and dance. No matter what stage your child is at, Dance Sensations has an age and level appropriate class that your child will love.
Competitive Cheerleading – At Dance Sensations we offer both competition and performance opportunities. The comp classes are designed for cheerleaders who are looking for a committed and a higher skill level cheerleading class. Students are required to attend team placements at the end of the year in order to be placed in their appropriate level team the following year. Competitive cheerleading classes require near perfect attendance, commitment to all events and a high expectation for student focus and work ethic!
